# Deposits and payment schedules

> Take a deposit when they accept, or split the estimate into payments they see before the job starts.

On the estimate, open **Edit**. Under **Pricing**, use **Add required deposit** or **Add payment schedule**. Both open **Deposit / payment schedule**.

Card checkout needs [Jomioz Payments](/integrations/stripe) on **Ready to accept payments**. Bank and check details come from [Invoice settings](/settings/invoices). Which methods are offered by default is under [Estimate settings](/settings/estimates) → **Customer payment methods**. One estimate can override that.

## Deposit only

Choose **Hub deposit only**. That amount is due when they accept in Client Hub.

| Mode | What they pay |
| ---------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| No deposit for this estimate | Nothing is due at acceptance |
| Percentage | That percent of the package they are accepting. It changes if they pick another package or another line |
| Flat amount | The same amount no matter which package they pick |

If the estimate has more than one package, the preview uses the package selected for the deposit. Their real deposit follows the package they accept.

Until it is paid, the status can sit on **Pending deposit**. They have accepted, and the estimate is not approved until the deposit is in. Expired estimates block the deposit as well as accept and decline.

## Payment schedule

Choose **Installment plan**. This replaces the simple deposit with the payments printed on the estimate and the PDF. The customer sees the order of payments in Client Hub.

**How amounts are entered** is **Percent** or **Fixed**. Switching clears the rows. Enter the plan again.

| Rule | Percent | Fixed |
| ---------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| What a row is | A share of the package payable | An amount you type |
| What it must add up to | 100% | That package’s payable, including tax. Local surcharge or withholding is included when your country adds it |
| Which package | The one selected under **Package payable to match** | The same. **Choose which package total the fixed amounts should match** if you have not picked one |

**Quick layouts** are **100% upfront**, **50 / 50**, **30 / 70**, and **Split total equally**. **Add installment** starts a new row at zero. **Fill last row** closes the remainder. **Save schedule** is refused until the plan is balanced.

**Required deposit on approval** on a row is the slice they pay in Client Hub when they approve. That row overrides the simple deposit on this estimate. If that slice is the whole total, use one installment only. Turn the checkbox off, or remove the plan, to set a deposit on the estimate instead.

**Due date** is when that payment is due. **Auto-charge on due date** charges a saved card on that date. It needs a card on file.

**Remove payment schedule** clears the plan.

## Collecting the deposit

On the estimate, open **Money** and click **Collect deposit**. The summary link **Open pay** opens that same tab.

| Path | Use it when |
| ----------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Pay online** | They will pay by card or Apple Pay. **Open payment page** or **Copy payment link** |
| **Record manual** | They already paid cash, check, or a bank transfer. Enter the amount, up to what is still outstanding, then **Save** or **Save & email receipt** |

**Remind to pay deposit** emails the pay link. It does not reopen the estimate or change the status.

**Money** also shows **Required**, **Received**, and **Outstanding**, and the installment list once a schedule exists. A paid step is **Paid**. One still waiting is **Awaiting payment**.

## After they accept

A deposit with no schedule can become one invoice with **Convert to invoice**. A schedule with more than one payment, or one payment taken in full when they approve, has to **Convert to job**. Each later stage is its own invoice. See [Payment plans and schedules](/help/invoice-payment-plan).
