# How to take or record a payment

> Card payments in Client Hub, and cash, bank, or check that you record yourself.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Turn on cards">
    Open **Settings → Jomioz Payments** and click **Connect**. If the page says **Complete setup**, finish that too. You are done when it says **Ready to accept payments**. **Accept card payments on invoices** in [Invoice settings](/settings/invoices) stays off until that connection is ready. The customer then pays from the invoice in Client Hub. The money goes to your Jomioz Payments account.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Record a payment you already took">
    On the invoice, click **Record payment**. Use this for **Cash**, **Bank transfer**, **Check**, or **Other**. Those methods print on the invoice once they are filled in under Invoice settings. Staff still enter the amount. The invoice does not mark itself paid.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**Offer tipping on invoice payments** lets the customer add a tip when they pay by card. Turn it off if you do not take tips.

A deposit before the job is [Deposits and payment schedules](/help/estimate-deposit). Splitting one invoice, or billing each estimate stage as its own invoice, is [Payment plans and schedules](/help/invoice-payment-plan).

## Record the payment

**Record payment** opens **Mark invoice as paid**. It records a manual payment and updates the status.

| Field                  | What to enter                                                                                                                                                         |
| ---------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Amount received | More than zero, and not more than the balance due. **Pay full balance** fills that amount |
| Payment method | Cash, check, bank transfer, card taken in person, or other. These are the manual methods |
| Payment date | When you took the money. **Pick date** |
| Payment reference | A receipt, transaction ID, or check number. Check uses **Check number**. Bank transfer uses **Bank transfer reference**. Some methods require a reference before save |
| Internal payment notes | Optional. They stay on the audit trail. The customer does not see them |

**Mark as paid** saves it. The invoice does not mark itself paid when you only print a bank-transfer line. Staff still enter the amount.

## What the invoice shows afterwards

**Payments received** lists how it was paid. Each row has **Date**, **Amount**, **Payment method**, **Tip**, and **Reference**, and who recorded a manual one. Online card charges show as **Online** and **Card (online)**. A bank debit taken online shows as **Bank debit (online)**. Cash, check, bank transfer, and other stay **Manual**.

**Payment status** shows **Amount due** and **Balance remaining**. If a payment plan is on, it also shows the current installment. **Card link not sent** means the customer cannot pay online until payment instructions go out. **Send payment link** or **Take card payment** are the fixes. **Record bank transfer** is the manual path for that method.

Automatic reminders start after the invoice is sent, and only if reminders are on. **Turn on reminders** applies the Standard schedule to the whole company. Wording and timing are still [Invoice settings](/settings/invoices). **Customer excluded from automatic reminders** means that customer is left out even when the company schedule is on.

A chargeback is the customer’s bank reversing a card payment. The invoice shows the amount as disputed, and the case is answered in Stripe, not by editing the payment row in Jomioz. Losing the case puts the amount back as owing.

Giving money back is [Refund an invoice](/help/invoice-refund). Changing the bill the customer was sent is a [credit note](/help/invoice-corrective). Stopping a draft is [Void or delete](/help/invoice-void). Writing off a balance you will not collect is [Write off an invoice](/help/invoice-write-off).

## Several invoices at once

On the invoice list, select sent invoices that still have a balance and click **Batch pay**. One payment method and date apply to all of them. Void, paid, credited, written off, unsent, and zero-balance invoices are left out.

Unpaid invoices are chased from Invoice settings → **Reminders**. A late fee, when it is on, is added there too. It is one fee per invoice. Some countries keep it off a fiscal invoice. That is in [Rules for your country](/help/your-country).
