# How to send an invoice

> What has to be true before Send works, then issue it so the customer can pay in Client Hub.

A draft is not a legal invoice yet. Sending is what the customer receives, and issuing is what locks the number.

## Before the button works

On a new invoice, **Invoice readiness** lists what is still missing. **Save & send** stays off until the blockers are clear. The usual ones:

| Readiness line | What to do |
| -------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Customer selected | Pick the customer. **Select a customer to enable sending.** |
| Line items complete | Add at least one line with a price. **Add at least one line item with a price to enable sending.** |
| Send-to email selected | The customer needs an email, or you pick who the message goes to |
| Payment method enabled | Turn on card, bank transfer, check, or cash. Otherwise the warning is **No payment methods set up** |
| Company tax ID in Settings → Company | Required before a compliant send when your country asks for it |
| Fiscal details verified | The customer’s tax ID, when a business invoice needs one |
| Customer VAT number for reverse charge | Add their VAT number, or switch those lines off reverse charge |
| Tax calculated | Confirm whether you collect tax. **Collect tax?** offers **Registered to collect tax** or **Not registered** |

A confirmed tax profile, a company registration number, or a withholding suggestion can also block the first send. Those checks depend on the country on your company. They are in [Rules for your country](/help/your-country). Full versus simplified invoices are in [Invoice settings](/settings/invoices).

## Send it

On the new-invoice wizard the steps are **Details**, **Line items**, **Payment**, and **Review & send**.

**Save draft** keeps the invoice and does not email anyone. It still has a temporary reference.

**Save & send** saves and emails the customer. Use this while it is still a draft you are willing to send.

**Issue & send** on an invoice that is ready to become the legal document registers it, locks the number series, then sends it. After that, the invoice is the document you correct with a [credit note](/help/invoice-corrective), not by editing the issued lines.

The customer opens it in Client Hub. **Preview PDF** and **Email preview** show what they will see before you send.

**Message to customer** is the note in that email. Wording defaults live under Invoice settings → **Email & SMS**.

## How they can pay

On **Payment**, turn on the methods this invoice should offer:

| Method | What the customer gets |
| ------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Card online | A secure pay link. Needs [Jomioz Payments](/integrations/stripe) at **Ready to accept payments**, and **Accept card payments on invoices** on |
| Bank transfer | Your bank details on the invoice |
| Check | Payable-to and a send-to address. The page warns if those are still blank |
| Cash | They pay you in person. You still [record the payment](/help/invoice-pay) |

If no method is on, the section says **No payment method enabled**.

## After it is sent

Reminders for invoices that stay unpaid are Invoice settings → **Reminders**. A late fee, when it is on, is added there too. Those are not edited on [Automations](/settings/automations).

**Send to Xero** copies the invoice across. That needs Growth or Pro, Xero connected, and account mapping saved. See [Connect Xero](/integrations/xero).

A sent invoice cannot be voided. If the amount is wrong, use a [credit note](/help/invoice-corrective). If you took the money and need to give it back, use a [refund](/help/invoice-refund). The refund does not rewrite the invoice.

If **Save & send** or **Issue & send** is missing or grey, the matching row is in [When a button is missing](/help/stuck).
